The Taliban announced on Tuesday that girls would be allowed to return to school as soon as possible.
Deputy Minister of Education Zabihullah Mujahid said: “We are finalising things… it will happen as soon as possible.”
Earlier in the week, the Ministry of Education instructed male teachers and students to return to secondary school.
However, the ministry said nothing about female teachers and students, sparking concerns about girls’ education.
“All male teachers and students should attend their educational institutions with effect from Saturday,” the ministry statement said.
The statement had prompted UNICEF to express concerns over girls’ education in Afghanistan under the Taliban.
UNICEF chief Henrietta Fore said she was “deeply worried” that the movement would not allow girls back into classrooms.
