For the First Time a Baluch Woman Elected Mayor in Iran

The Islamic city council of Kalat city, Sarbaaz district, selected “Samiya Baluchzahi” as the mayor of the central city of the zone in the last month. It is the first time in the history of Sistan and Baluchistan that a Baloch woman can accede to such a position.

Negah biweekly journal quoted “BaluchPress”, the chief of the city council of Kalat, Ataullah Bozorgzadeh, as saying, “Miss Baluchzahi was elected to this position by absolute majority (five) votes of the members of the council.”

Choosing a local woman as a mayor in the Iranian Baluchistan – keeping in mind the traditional customs of the province– is unprecedented.

“Selecting a Baluch woman can encourage other local women to be more active in their social lives. As well as, it can be an opportunity for all expert ladies to come forward after being isolated. We hope a greater number of Baluch women participate in various fields in future,” Bozorgzadeh added more.

He also said, “The canon has been approved by the governor of Sistan-Baluchistan. The farewell and introduction ceremony of the previous and new mayors will be held soon.”

In an interview with “Shargh” daily based in Tehran, Samiya Baluchzahi said she has broken the taboo. She thanked the people of Sarbaaz and scholars over supporting her to take the post of mayoralty.

It is noteworthy that 26 years old Miss Samiya Baluchzahi has done MA in industrial engineering from the Science and Research faculty of the Tehran University. She had been one of the elite students of this university.
