There are three conditions for I’tikaf:
(1) Wajib [necessary] (2) Sunnat (3) Mustahab.
The detail is as following below:
1. Wajib [necessary]: When a person takes a vow that if a certain wish or work of his is fulfilled, he will undertake to carry out the worship of E’tikaf, thus his wish or his work is fulfilled so it is necessary to carry out E’tikaf. This is called “wajib E’tikaf”.
2. Sunnat-e-Muakkadah E’tikaf: To remain in a masjid in the last ten days particularly with the intention that our holy prophet Muhammad صلی اللہ علیه وسلم has sited in the same days in the masjid; several authentic Ahadith state that holy prophet صلی اللہ علیه وسلم regularly sat for E’tikaf in the last ten days of Ramadan. If some of any community remains in E’tikaf during this period, the rest of the community will be absolved of this duty. The Ahadith of E’tikaf are as following:
Ibn ‘Umar (Allah be pleased with both of them) reported that the Apostle of Allah (may peace be upon him) used to observe E’tikaf in the last ten days of Ramadan.
Abdullah bin Omar (Allah be pleased with both of them) reported that the Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him) used to observe E’tikaf in the last ten days of Ramadan.
Nafi’ said: Abdullah (Allah be pleased with him) showed me the place in the mosque where the Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him) used to observe E’tikaf.
Umm-ul-Mumenin A’yisha (Allah be pleased with her) reported that the Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him) used to observe i’tikaf in the last ten days of Ramadan.
This hadith has been narrated by Sayyida A’yisha (Allah be pleased with her) through another chain of transmitters.
Sayyida A’yisha (Allah be pleased with her) reported that the Messenger of Allah (may peace he upon him) used to observe i’tikaf in the last ten days of Ramadan till Allah called him back (to his heavenly home). Then his wives observed i’tikaf after him.
3. Mustahab: To remain in E’tikaf at any time other that that last 10 days of Ramadan, whether it be in the first ten days or in any other month.
The main purpose of E’tikaf is to find out “Lailat-ul-Qadr”
Certainly the main goal of observing E’tikaf is to get the unlimited rewards of great night “Lailat-ul-Qadr” which is better than thousand months and the best Angel Gabriel علیه السلام comes down a long with many other angels to meet with the people who worship or pray to Allah or remember their God almighty; these angels say Ameen on their prayers and orisons. This blessed night remains until the time of fajr (after dawn) approaches.
