Iran: Censure of Security Personnelover Harassing Sunni Students

A famous Iranian Sunni scholar criticized the ‘biased’ behavior of some security personnel with mostly Sunni students and religious activists at the entry points of Zahedan, southeastern Iran.

Talking to a huge number of worshippers in Azad-Shahr, northern Iran on the last Friday of August 2014, ‘Mawlana Mohammad HusseinGorgij’expressed his concerns and regret over the reports on stopping Sunni students to enter Zahedan, the city of Islamic seminaries and schools.

He said,“The Sunni scholars [of Iran] do not train terrorists and anti-regime students in religious seminaries. Why security forces harass and create troubles forsome citizens with religiousstyle? Why they stop the students of Darululoom Zahedanat the entranceways of Zahedan city?”

The prominent Islamic scholar asked the senior officials to pursue this issue as soon as possibleso“such ignorant people must be tried and punished seriously”.

According to the official website of Mawlana Gorgij, the Friday Imam of Sunnis in Azad-Shahr, Mawlana Gorgijalluded to misbehavior of some security forces with Sunni students and some citizens at the entry points of Zahedan and said, “The personnelconfiscate their identity cards deporting them to their hometowns. Darululoom Makki in Zahedan is the central Islamic seminary of the Sunni community in Iran where whole faculties are active and different Islamic sciences are taught. As well as, technically it stands on the first stage in education over the country. Thus students desire to get admission in that seminary.”

Declaring teaching and learning ‘the certain right of every man and woman, the rector of Farooqia Seminary in Galikash, Golestan province, underlined, “As Mawlana Abdol-Hamid has stated, Zahedan is like other cities of the country and entrance to this city does not need passport or visa. If it is, then tell us to get visa to enterZahedan!”

The majority of harassed students belong to Golestan and Khorasan (North, Razavi and South) provinces. While many students from the rest districts of Sistan-Baluchistan have been stopped and harassed before entering the city.
.
Mawlana Gorgij furtehr said, “It was unexpected for us to face such problesm in the governemnt of ‘discretion and hope’. the current government has been elected by the vote of the majority of the nation and Sunnis are among them. getting eduction in other parts of the country should not be considered any threat and danger.”

He said, “The Islamic Republic of Iran must be thankful to the Iranian Sunni community of Iran;when people in the most of the neighboring countries suffered from discrimination and restriction, took to streets and protested against their regimes demanding the collapse of them. On the other hand, Iranian Sunnis never revolted against the government despite discriminations and restrictions.Because we do not want to create anarchy in the country but we desire security of the country.”

Friday Imam of Sunnis in Azad-Shahr added more, “The Islamic Republic of Iran must appreciate Sunni scholars because they,on top of them Mawlana Abdol-Hamid, have never allowed anyone to chant any slogan against the regime or authorities. They always desire peace for all. Such people must be appreciated and their students should not be put in distress.”

Mawlana Gorgijmarked the root of the emergence of terrorism and wicked groups in ‘discriminations and constraints’ and stated,“If you do not allow a student to study more, he definitely will be obsessive and he may try to join extremists, dissent groups and commit suicide attack. If we look for the root of the majority of terrorism and wicked groups, we will find most of them having root in discriminations and pressures.”

“Thus if you (authorities) do something against people, you should consider its consequences. So we request the senior officials in country to punish such ignorant people seriously and stop them,” Shaikh Mohammad Hussein Gorgij concluded his points.
