Clashes between rival ethnic groups have left at least 1,000 people dead in the southern Pakistani port city of Karachi over the past seven months, officials say.
Karachi police chief, Waseem Ahmed, told reporters on Thursday that hundreds were victims of targeted killings.
The police official added that over 300 localities of the port city have been declared sensitive, a Press TV correspondent reported.
The unrest has prompted the authorities to arrest 40 suspects and deploy extra troops to control the situation in Karachi.
The government has blamed pro-Taliban militants and the banned group of Sipah-e-Sahaba Pakistan for most of the deaths in recent days.
Pakistan’s largest city, Karachi, is also home to numerous ethnic groups and has been wracked by clashes between rival ethnic and political factions for much of the 1990s.
Militant attacks and political unrest have claimed the lives of over 4,000 people throughout Pakistan since 2007.
