A team of experts at Umm al-Qura University in Mecca is studying the reinforcement of the Kaaba’s Kiswah using Kevlar, the para-aramid synthetic fiber, in order to make it resist high temperatures and heavy weights.
According to the website of the general presidency for the affairs of the two holy mosques, Mohammad Bajouda, director-general of the King Abdulaziz Complex for the Kaaba’s cover, said the Kevlar material will be integrated with advanced synthetic fibers to support the silk threads and certain amounts will be used in the automatic weaving process to strengthen the cover and prevent it from tearing and expanding and bear heavy weights.
Nanotechnology
Bajouda said the Kiswah will also be strengthened using nanotechnology which is used in the dyeing process in the first phases of production. Silk threads are also treated before being using in the automatic weaving process in order to strengthen them and make them resist environmental factors and mishandling.
Kevlar is a fabric that is well-known for its flexible threads and unique resistance traits. It is used to make bulletproof vests and it is also characterized with its great resistance to fires and cuts.
Kevlar is also used in manufacturing cars and planes.
