A Sunni Cleric Sent to Jail

The authorities in the north-western Iran sent a famous Sunni scholar, Mamousta Reza Abdi, to jail after dismissing him from imamate in a grand mosque of Urumiyeh.
Local sources reported Mamousta Abdi was summed to the special court of clerics in Tabriz on Wednesday 21st Dec. and then sent to jail for 6 months. He has been sentenced two years exile, too.
The famous Kurd scholar was the Friday imam of Quds mosque in Islamabad town of Urumiyeh, but dismissed by the authorities. He is also a teacher at “Salahuddin Ayyubi” seminary in the same city.
According to some sources in Kurdistan province of Iran, the jailed cleric is close to Jamaa’t Dawat-o-Eslah organization of Iran.
There is a considerable population of Sunnis, mainly from Kurdish descent, in the western Azerbaijan province. Sunnis constitute almost 50 % of the residents in Urumiyeh, the provincial capital of Azerbaijan Gharbi province.
