{"id":880,"date":"2010-10-17T15:59:55","date_gmt":"2010-10-17T15:59:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/localhost\/wp3\/?p=880"},"modified":"2010-10-17T15:59:55","modified_gmt":"2010-10-17T15:59:55","slug":"us-runs-secret-prison-in-afghanistan-report","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sunnionline.us\/english\/2010\/10\/17\/880\/","title":{"rendered":"US runs secret prison in Afghanistan: report"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin-left: 5px; float: right;\" alt=\"bagram-afghanistan\" src=\"images\/stories\/news\/bagram-afghanistan.jpg\" width=\"229\" height=\"175\" \/>A new report says the US military is mistreating detainees and violating its own rules at a secret prison in Afghanistan as Washington is pushing to make peace with the Taliban insurgents.<\/div>\n<p>  <!--more-->  <\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">The 16-page report by the Open Society Foundation said on Friday that Afghans call the secret site &#8220;Tor Jail,&#8221; or &#8220;Black Jail,&#8221; and that consistent accounts from detainees refer to being kept without adequate shelter or food or other basic rights.<br \/>The Pentagon quickly rejected abuses, but said it was looking into the allegations.<br \/>&#8220;The Department of Defense does not operate any &#8216;secret prisons,'&#8221; a spokesman said.<br \/>However, the spokesman said officials had &#8220;received the report from (Open Society) and are reviewing it.&#8221;<br \/>&#8220;Detainees state that they were held in excessively cold isolation cells; supplied inappropriate or inadequate food, bedding, and blanketing; denied exposure to natural light; unable to carry out their religious duties; restricted from exercise; and kept from meeting with the International Committee of the Red Cross,&#8221; Open Society said.<br \/>It said that some detainees said they have been held there as recently as this year.<br \/>&#8220;The allegations about Tor Jail should be taken seriously by the Obama administration, which has sought to reform detention practices in Afghanistan,&#8221; said Jonathan Horowitz, author of the report.<br \/>The US military has been under the scrutiny of rights groups for years after revelations of abuse at prisons in Iraq and at CIA &#8220;black sites,&#8221; and in the light of controversy over the military facility at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.<\/p>\n<p><em>Source: AlAlam News<\/em><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A new report says the US military is mistreating detainees and violating its own rules at a secret prison in Afghanistan as Washington is pushing to make peace with the Taliban insurgents.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[32],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-880","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-c59-islamic-world"],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.6 -
