{"id":837,"date":"2010-10-06T11:50:54","date_gmt":"2010-10-06T11:50:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/localhost\/wp3\/?p=837"},"modified":"2010-10-06T11:50:54","modified_gmt":"2010-10-06T11:50:54","slug":"documents-reveal-israeli-pessimism-in-oct-war","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sunnionline.us\/english\/2010\/10\/06\/837\/","title":{"rendered":"Documents reveal Israeli pessimism in Oct. war"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin-left: 5px; float: right;\" alt=\"old-israel-leader\" src=\"images\/stories\/news\/old-israel-leader.jpg\" width=\"241\" height=\"194\" \/>DUBAI: Newly published documents to mark the 37th anniversary of the 1973 October war, revealed deep pessimism in the Israeli leadership at the very start of the hostilities with Egypt and Syria, an Israeli newspaper reported Tuesday.<\/div>\n<p>  <!--more-->  <\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">According to documents published in the Yediot Ahnonoth daily, Israel\u2019s former defense minister Moshe Dayan declared that the military\u2019s position on the strategic Suez Canal was \u201clost\u201d and suggested that troops instead retreat 30 kilometers (19 miles) after the Egyptian army crossed the waterway on Oct. 6.<br \/>The Egyptian assault along the Suez canal as well as a simultaneous Syrian attack on the Golan Heights in the North seem to have taken the Israeli leadership by surprise and also caused heavy initial losses.<br \/>&#8220;Where we can evacuate \u2013 we will evacuate. In places we can&#8217;t evacuate \u2013 we will leave the wounded. Those who make it \u2013 make it. If they decide to surrender, they&#8217;ll surrender. We have to tell them, &#8216;We can&#8217;t reach you. Try to bust through or surrender.'&#8221;, the paper cited Dayan as saying during a dramatic cabinet meeting held on Oct. 7 in which former Israeli Prime Minister Golda Meir also attended.<br \/>According to the paper, Meir responded by saying, &#8220;I don\u2019t understand one thing \u2013 I thought we would begin hitting them as soon as they cross the canal. What happened?&#8221;<br \/>&#8220;We lost tanks. There was artillery, our tanks were hit. The planes weren&#8217;t able to approach because of the missiles. A thousand artillery barrels allowed the tanks to cross and prevented us from getting close. The planning and methodology was Russian. Three years of preparation.&#8221; Dayan replied.<br \/>Dayan spoke of hundreds of fatalities and numerous prisoners of war, and admitted he was wrong in his original opinion of the enemy&#8217;s objectives.<br \/>Dayan reportedly predicted that the international community would ridicule Israel and refer to it as a &#8220;paper tiger&#8221; after the country failed to maintain its initial attack despite having a military edge.<br \/>&#8220;This is not the time for soul-searching. I underestimated the enemy&#8217;s strength and miscalculated our forces&#8217; ability. The Arab fighters are much improved; they have many weapons. They hit our tanks with their personal rifles. The missiles serve as an umbrella, which our planes have a hard time bursting. I don\u2019t know if a preemptive strike would have changed the picture significantly,&#8221; he said.<br \/>Ferocious tank battles took place on the Golan Heights &#8211; in one encounter the barrels of Israeli and Syrian tanks reportedly touched each other &#8211; and along the Suez Canal the Egyptian troops managed to overrun the string of Israeli outposts, the so-called Bar Lev Line.<br \/>Mobile Egyptian Surface to Air (SAM) missile batteries provided a defensive umbrella for the Egyptian troops and also prevented Israeli planes from being able to give much needed air support to ground troops.<br \/>According to the newly released documents, Dayan believed the Arab countries wanted to conquer all of the Jewish state. &#8220;They (Arabs) want to go for the entire Land of Israel,&#8221; Dayan was quoted as saying.<br \/>&#8220;This is the second round since 1948.&#8221; &#8220;It is a battle for the Land of Israel,&#8221; Meir replied.<br \/>A ceasefire brokered by U.N. on Oct. 22 quickly fell apart, with each side blaming the other for the breach. By Oct. 24, the Israelis had considerably improved their positions and completed their encirclement of Egypt\u2019s army.
