Raad Tami al-Mujamai and Khamis Sabaa al-Aqabi were killed when bombs attached to their cars detonated on Tuesday in the town of Buhriz, 60km northeast of Baghdad, police said.<\/div>\n
    <\/p>\n
The two were members of a local Awakening Council, or Sahwa – bands of former Sunni fighters formed in 2006 to help US and Iraqi forces fight al-Qaeda.
Buhriz, where the attacks occurred, lies in Diyala, a religiously and ethnically mixed province with a Sunni majority that has seen much fighting in the past.
Al-Mujamai was a senior member of the Mujamai tribe, one of the largest in Diyala.
The targeted killings of policemen, soldiers, government officials and former fighters are stoking tensions in Iraq following a parliamentary election in March that produced no clear winner and has yet to yield a government.
Seven other people were killed in similar attacks in Baghdad, Mosul and Fallujah.
