{"id":470,"date":"2010-06-21T16:08:51","date_gmt":"2010-06-21T16:08:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/localhost\/wp3\/?p=470"},"modified":"2010-06-21T16:08:51","modified_gmt":"2010-06-21T16:08:51","slug":"deadly-blasts-target-iraq-bank","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sunnionline.us\/english\/2010\/06\/21\/470\/","title":{"rendered":"Deadly blasts target Iraq bank"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin-left: 5px; float: right;\" alt=\"bank-blast-iraq\" src=\"images\/stories\/news\/bank-blast-iraq.jpg\" width=\"235\" height=\"199\" \/>Two car bombs have exploded outside the headquarters of the Trade Bank of Iraq in Baghdad, killing at least 26 people and injuring 53 others, security officials have said.<\/div>\n<p>  <!--more-->  <\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">The near-simultaneous blasts occurred shortly after 11am [08:30 GMT] on Sunday in the Yarmouk neighbourhood in western Baghdad.<br \/>Iraqi security forces say suicide bombers drove two cars laden with explosives to the bank, then detonated them.<br \/>&#8220;Each car was loaded with 80 kilogrammes of ammonium nitrate,&#8221; the Baghdad operations command said in a statement. &#8220;They were detonated simultaneously.&#8221;<br \/>It was unclear whether the attack was carried out by anti-government fighters, or whether the bombings were part of an attempted robbery.<br \/>Five bank guards were killed in the explosion, and six others were wounded, according to Hussein al-Uzri, the bank&#8217;s chairman, who said the institution would still open for business on Monday.<br \/>&#8220;This attack on our headquarters in Baghdad&#8230; was an act of cowardice by malevolent forces who wish to undermine the progress that Iraq is making,&#8221; he said in a statement.<br \/>One of the two bombs exploded near an office of Iraq&#8217;s interior ministry where Iraqis apply for their national ID cards. Many of the victims from that blast were women, according to the Iraqi army.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Heavily guarded area<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Yarmouk district is not far from Baghdad&#8217;s heavily-guarded Green Zone. <br \/>Al Jazeera&#8217;s Omar al-Saleh, reporting from Baghdad, said the location of the attack would be viewed as another sign that the Iraqi army and police are struggling to provide basic security.<br \/>&#8220;If you walk 150 metres, you will have an Iraqi army checkpoint there,&#8221; he said. &#8220;So it&#8217;s kind of a blow to the security forces.&#8221;<br \/>The bank is one of the public sector&#8217;s most active financial institutions and has been working to encourage foreign investment in Iraq.<br \/>Banks have become frequent targets for both criminals and fighters in recent months. A June 13 raid on Iraq&#8217;s central bank killed 15 people which the security forces blamed on the remnants of al-Qaeda in Iraq.
