{"id":3753,"date":"2014-07-10T13:35:19","date_gmt":"2014-07-10T13:35:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/localhost\/wp3\/?p=3753"},"modified":"2014-07-10T13:35:19","modified_gmt":"2014-07-10T13:35:19","slug":"several-killed-in-us-drone-strike-in-pakistan","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sunnionline.us\/english\/2014\/07\/10\/3753\/","title":{"rendered":"Several killed in US drone strike in Pakistan"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"line-height: 1.3em; color: #000000;\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"images\/stories\/news3\/drone-pk.jpg\" border=\"0\" style=\"float: right; margin: 5px;\" \/>At least six people have been killed in a US drone strike in the North Waziristan tribal area, where a Pakistani military operation against Taliban fighters is ongoing, intelligence sources tell Al Jazeera.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>  <!--more-->  <\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Two missiles were fired on Thursday on a compound and a vehicle in the village of Madakhel in the Dattakhel area of the province, intelligence sources said.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The officials spoke on condition of anonymity, as they were not authorised to speak to the media. Al Jazeera cannot independently verify the identity of those killed, as access to the area is restricted.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Thursday\u2019s incident is the fourth US strike in Pakistan since a Pakistani military operation against the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) and its allies in North Waziristan began last month.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The previous three strikes included twin attacks on June 12, which killed at least 10 people in Miranshah, and another strike on Miranshah on June 18, which killed at least four people.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Speaking to reporters at a closed door briefing on July 1, Pervez Rashid, the Pakistani information minister, said that US drone strikes during the ongoing Pakistani military operation were &#8220;counterproductive&#8221;.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Major-General Asim Bajwa, the chief of the army&#8217;s PR wing, said that drones &#8220;don\u2019t help us&#8221;.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">&#8220;This is an operation which is Pakistan\u2019s own operation,&#8221; he said. &#8220;We have conceived it. This is our own capability [\u2026] if there is any kind of support that we\u2019ve asked for, it\u2019s [from] Afghans across the border or ISAF.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">&#8220;Drones are not at all, I repeat not at all, part of our operational plan.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Pakistan&#8217;s Foreign Office had issued a routine condemnation of the earlier strikes in June, saying Pakistan &#8220;regards such strikes as a violation of its sovereignty and territorial integrity.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The June 12 strikes broke a six-month hiatus in the US drone campaign in Pakistan \u2013 the longest such break since US President Barack Obama took office in 2009.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>&#8216;Safe haven for terrorists&#8217;<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Pakistan\u2019s military operation &#8211; dubbed Zarb-e-Azb &#8211; is ongoing in North Waziristan, with the military saying that it has killed more than 400 people in air strikes and a ground offensive.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Pakistan\u2019s military terms all of those killed &#8220;terrorists,&#8221; but it is impossible to verify that claim, due to restrictions on reporting.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">On Wednesday, Major-General Zafarullah Khan, the military&#8217;s top ranking officer in North Waziristan, said that &#8220;80 percent of Miranshah and the adjoining area&#8221; had been cleared of fighters.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">&#8220;North Waziristan had transformed into a hub and safe haven for terrorists of all colours and creeds,&#8221; hesaid during a media trip to Miranshah.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The operation has also generated an exodus of internally displaced people from the remote, underdeveloped tribal area.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">According to government figures, more than 876,000 people have been displaced by the ongoing operation, after fleeing the Pakistani military\u2019s aerial bombing campaign and Taliban reprisal attacks.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Source:<em><strong> Al Jazeera<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>At least six people have been killed in a US drone strike in the North Waziristan tribal area, where a Pakistani military operation against Taliban fighters is ongoing, intelligence sources tell Al Jazeera.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[1],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-3753","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-uncategorized"],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.6 -
