{"id":3710,"date":"2014-06-19T06:28:23","date_gmt":"2014-06-19T06:28:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/localhost\/wp3\/?p=3710"},"modified":"2014-06-19T06:28:23","modified_gmt":"2014-06-19T06:28:23","slug":"the-sweetness-of-ramadan","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sunnionline.us\/english\/2014\/06\/19\/3710\/","title":{"rendered":"The Sweetness of Ramadan"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"images\/stories\/news3\/theSweetness-of-Ramadan_.jpg\" border=\"0\" style=\"float: right; margin: 5px;\" \/>A light from the next room only illuminated enough to see the shape of the prayer rug under my feet.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>  <!--more-->  <\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">My long, flowing hijab swayed with the fan above, allowing the cool air to flow around me.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">My heart was full of love for my creator and my sisters who have lined up to pray next to me.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">My body melted away and my mind forgot its troubles. There was only my prayer.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">It was Ramadan and the time for reward was slipping away quickly. My cohorts and I decided to seize the opportunity. We set up in the mosque to pray through the night in the last ten days of Ramadan.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">In the small hours of the morning, we alternately snacked lightly in preparation for the next day\u2019s fast; told stories of former Ramadans; and stood together and prayed for forgiveness, for guidance, for our suffering brothers and sisters around the world, and for goodness in this life and the hereafter.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">After a long day of working, fasting for 12+ hours, and cooking for the breaking of fast, standing all night in prayer might have seemed like a burden. But it was the sweetest and most dear time in my life.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">My friends and I decided to grasp at the opportunity given to us and compete in good deeds in the most amazing month of the year.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cRamadan has come to you. (It is) a month of blessing, in which Allah covers you with blessing, for He sends down Mercy, decreases sins and answers prayers. In it, Allah looks at your competition (in good deeds), and boasts about you to His angels. So show Allah goodness from yourselves, for the unfortunate one is he who is deprived in (this month) of the mercy of Allah, the Mighty, the Exalted.\u201d (An-Nasa\u2019i, 2106)<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The month of Ramadan is quickly approaching. And to those who have tasted and relished in the experience of spiritual fulfillment, Ramadan is welcomed like an old and familiar friend who will put everything to rights.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">There are countless reasons to fast during Ramadan. But many Muslims look forward to the holy month because of the feeling they get when they put the needs and desires of the soul first. Those who taste the sweetness of Ramadan look forward to this time of year to detach from the worldly worries and fulfill the needs of the soul.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Stephanie Siam\u2019s First Ramadan Allowed Her to Grow as a Muslim<\/strong><\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">When I first became Muslim, I was encouraged by my closest Muslim friends to take things slowly. Soon after, I started frequenting a local mosque. It was a comforting atmosphere for me as a new Muslim. I got to know several ladies, and they knew I was a graduate student at the university.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">When the fall semester started, the kindergarten teacher at the mosque-associated Islamic school left for six weeks\u2019 maternity leave. I was asked to fill in for her and agreed instantly.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">It just so happened that the majority of the coverage would take place during my first Ramadan. I\u2019ll admit, I was afraid of Ramadan. I\u2019d never intentionally fasted before. How was I going to attend class, do my job and teach 4- and 5-year-olds the ABCs without even a cup of water?<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">But that wasn\u2019t all. Up to that point, I was still \u201ctaking it slow\u201d with Islam. Pointedly, I didn\u2019t wear hijab. When I went to teach, I would wear a scarf because it was required. But as soon as I\u2019d leave the mosque, the hijab disappeared so nobody would be the wiser at my next stop \u2013 university.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Ramadan started. It turned out to be easier than I thought. However, one thing plagued me. And as Ramadan passed, I felt guiltier. When I\u2019d leave the mosque and remove my hijab, I\u2019d ask myself, \u201cWhy don\u2019t you just leave it on?\u201d I couldn\u2019t answer at first; but then one day, I decided to wear it.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Surprisingly, nobody cared. I mean, my Muslim friends were happy. But my non-Muslim friends were open-minded enough to not be concerned with what I did or didn\u2019t wear. I\u2019d made the right decision.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">As the end of Ramadan approached, I counted the days until I could celebrate Eid-al-Fitr with my friends. Coincidentally, my first Eid as a Muslim also fell on my 24thbirthday.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Subhan\u2019Allah! To me, it was a sign from God: I chose the right path. But the first Ramadan I really practiced is a standard by which I try to reach every Ramadan. I was young and became very enthusiastic about worship.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The first Ramadan I fasted, I spent my nights in prayer, my evenings with the Muslim community, and my days fasting and working. My hunger and fatigue seemed a small price for the peacefulness and contentment I felt.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">In the short time that I slept, I had dreams that would come true in my waking hours. All the normal annoyances of my life started to seem insignificant. I gave what little money I had in charity and somehow my sustenance seemed to find its way to me out of nowhere. I truly felt like Allah was my ally.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">I felt like the hadith:<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cI [Allah] shall be his hearing with which he shall hear, his sight with which he shall see, his hands with which he shall hold, and his feet with which he shall walk. And if he asks (something) of Me, I shall surely give it to him, and if he takes refuge in Me, I shall certainly grant him it.\u201d (Al-Bukhari, 25) was coming true in my life.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">For most of the year, we concern ourselves with what foods will be the most satisfying to our stomachs.
