{"id":3692,"date":"2014-06-12T06:46:48","date_gmt":"2014-06-12T06:46:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/localhost\/wp3\/?p=3692"},"modified":"2014-06-12T06:46:48","modified_gmt":"2014-06-12T06:46:48","slug":"jihadists-take-saddams-hometown-of-tikrit","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sunnionline.us\/english\/2014\/06\/12\/3692\/","title":{"rendered":"Jihadists take Saddam\u2019s hometown of Tikrit"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"images\/stories\/news3\/daesh-takrit.jpg\" border=\"0\" style=\"float: right; margin: 5px;\" \/>Militants from the extremist Islamist State of Iraq and Syria on Wednesday seized the northern Iraqi city of Tikrit, a day after the country\u2019s second-largest city Mosul fell under their control.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>  <!--more-->  <\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Their sweeping advances, and the rapid collapse of the Iraqi army &#8211; on which the United States has spent at least $16 billion to rebuild &#8211; has sent shockwaves regionally and internationally.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Militants took control of government buildings, financial institutions and weapons stockpiles, which could help them gain strength in their war against the rule of Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">In Tikrit &#8211; the hometown of the late Saddam Hussein, and the capital of Salaheddin province &#8211; the militants seized a local prison and freed hundreds of inmates.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Tikrit lies roughly half way between Baghdad and Mosul.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cAll of Tikrit is in the hands of the militants,\u201d a police colonel was quoted by Agence France-Presse as saying.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">A police brigadier-general said the ISIS militants attacked from the north, west and south of the city.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">In Mosul, the militants on Wednesday seized 48 Turks from the Turkish consulate, including the consul-general, three children, and several members of Turkey\u2019s special forces, a source in the Turkish prime minister\u2019s office said.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The United States voiced concern about the \u201cserious situation.\u201d<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">ISIS \u201cis not only a threat to the stability of Iraq, but a threat to the entire region,\u201d State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki said.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon called on political leaders to unite in the face of threats.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">His spokesman Stephane Dujarric said Ban was \u201cgravely concerned by the serious deteriorating of the security situation in Mosul, where thousands of civilians have been displaced.\u201d<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Chris Doyle, the director of the Council for Arab-British Understanding (Caabu), told the BBC on Wednesday that alongside other regional crises, Iraq needs to be addressed with urgency and seriousness by the international community that it has lacked so far.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cIt\u2019s essential that the leading international powers work with regional partners to ensure that this full-scale war doesn\u2019t intensify further. Events in Iraq are a product of an Iraqi, regional and international failure over many years,\u201d Doyle said.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Nouzad Hadi, the governor of the Iraqi Kurdish city of Arbil, blamed Maliki\u2019s government for the fall of Nineveh province, including its capital Mosul.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Hadi told Dubai-based Hadath TV that Iraqi military forces \u201care well-armed with the latest weaponry from the United States,\u201d but \u201cMaliki\u2019s security policy has led to this failure.\u201d<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">He added: \u201cThis is a real tragedy.\u201d<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Commenting on Maliki\u2019s policy towards the Sunnis in Iraq, Doyle said: \u201cThere needs to be a political approach that\u2019s inclusive, one which doesn\u2019t alienate the Sunni community or other major constituencies.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cThis has been a considerable failure of the [Maliki] government&#8230; that has taken sectarian politics to a new low.
