{"id":3657,"date":"2014-05-25T05:52:16","date_gmt":"2014-05-25T05:52:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/localhost\/wp3\/?p=3657"},"modified":"2014-05-25T05:52:16","modified_gmt":"2014-05-25T05:52:16","slug":"at-least-27-dead-in-raid-on-major-yemeni-city","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sunnionline.us\/english\/2014\/05\/25\/3657\/","title":{"rendered":"At least 27 dead in raid on major Yemeni city"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"images\/stories\/news3\/yamen-hazramoot.jpg\" border=\"0\" style=\"float: right; margin: 5px;\" \/>At least 27 people were killed in an overnight raid by dozens of al Qaeda rebels on Yemeni government buildings and military posts in Seyoun, the second largest city in the south-eastern Hadramout province, a local official and residents said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>  <!--more-->  <\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The gunmen targeted the main military posts, the local police headquarters and bank branches and briefly captured some buildings before they withdrew in the morning, they said.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Al Qaeda has conducted many hit-and-run attacks since the Yemeni army drove it from its strongholds in Abyan and Shabwa provinces, also in the south, last month.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Gulf Arab countries and the United States are concerned about violence in Western-allied Yemen, a neighbour of major oil exporter Saudi Arabia and home to one of al Qaeda&#8217;s most active wings.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The rebels arrived in 15 pickup trucks from desert areas outside Seyoun and proceeded to attack various government buildings, a local security official said.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">&#8220;They wanted to capture the city and control it,&#8221; the official, who asked not to be named, told Reuters.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The official put the death toll among the rebe\u015fs at 20, saying they took away 18 bodies.
