{"id":3626,"date":"2014-05-12T06:15:32","date_gmt":"2014-05-12T06:15:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/localhost\/wp3\/?p=3626"},"modified":"2014-05-12T06:15:32","modified_gmt":"2014-05-12T06:15:32","slug":"birth-defects-reported-after-chemical-attacks-in-syria","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sunnionline.us\/english\/2014\/05\/12\/3626\/","title":{"rendered":"Birth defects reported after chemical attacks in Syria"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"images\/stories\/news3\/syria%20news.jpg\" border=\"0\" style=\"float: right; margin: 5px;\" \/>Allegations are mounting that chemical weapons attacks in Syria last year have caused newborns to suffer from birth defects.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>  <!--more-->  <\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Syrian doctors and activists have circulated a picture of a severely deformed baby girl, reportedly named Fatima Abdulghafar, who was recently born in Damascus, but soon died.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Nidhal Shikhani, an activist, said medical staff in Damascus had said that the reason for the baby&#8217;s deformities was due to chemical attacks that struck the eastern suburb of Ghouta in August last year, killing hundreds of people.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">After the attack and a U.N. investigation, a Security Council resolution demanded that Syria dismantle its chemical arsenal.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The doctors also showed a picture of another four-month-old baby named Joud, who was born with no left foot and a missing fingertip and toe.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Joud\u2019s mother &#8211; pregnant with her at the time &#8211; inhaled poisonous gas after Homs was struck with chemical weapons in July last year.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">A Syria-based NGO, the Violations Documentation Center in Syria, told Al Arabiya News that it is currently probing the cases.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cWe are still gathering information to identify the cause of these deformities and whether it is caused by chemical weapons or not,\u201d a statement said.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Rose Gottemoeller, U.S. Undersecretary of State for arms control and international security, said on Friday that Syria has moved about 92 percent of its chemical weapons stocks to port for shipment out of the country.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Gottemoeller added that the rest are at a single site near Damascus.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Source:<\/span> <em><strong>Alarabiya<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Allegations are mounting that chemical weapons attacks in Syria last year have caused newborns to suffer from birth defects.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[1],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-3626","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-uncategorized"],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.6 -
