{"id":3617,"date":"2014-05-10T07:11:44","date_gmt":"2014-05-10T07:11:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/localhost\/wp3\/?p=3617"},"modified":"2014-05-10T07:11:44","modified_gmt":"2014-05-10T07:11:44","slug":"yemen-soldiers-killed-near-sanaa-presidential-palace","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sunnionline.us\/english\/2014\/05\/10\/3617\/","title":{"rendered":"Yemen soldiers killed near Sanaa presidential palace"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"images\/stories\/news3\/sana-alqaeda.jpg\" border=\"0\" style=\"float: right; margin: 5px;\" \/>At least four Yemeni soldiers have died in a gun battle with militants outside the presidential palace in the capital, Sanaa, according to reports.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>  <!--more-->  <\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">A security source said the clash broke out when gunmen in a vehicle tried to attack a gate outside the palace.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">An explosion was also heard near a building used by the security services in the capital.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The Yemeni military is mounting a major offensive against al Qaeda-linked militants.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Heavy gunfire resounded through Sanaa for about an hour as presidential security guards battled with militants, witnesses say.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Retaliation<\/strong><\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">There were reports of casualties on both sides.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">President Abdrabuh Mansur Hadi was not believed to be at the palace at the time.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">As fighting raged there, an explosion was heard in another district of the capital near a building used by the security services.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Officials quickly blamed al-Qaeda-linked militants for the attacks, the BBC&#8217;s Arab affairs editor Sebastian Usher reports.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">But they denied earlier reports that the defence minister had survived an assassination attempt in the south where the army is mounting a new offensive against al-Qaeda.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Yemen&#8217;s state news agency Saba said security forces in Sanaa killed an al-Qaeda commander, Mohammed Said al-Shabwani, on Thursday after he resisted arrest.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">State media earlier said foreign fighters were among those killed or captured in the military campaign in the past week.
