{"id":3583,"date":"2014-04-27T06:10:24","date_gmt":"2014-04-27T06:10:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/localhost\/wp3\/?p=3583"},"modified":"2014-04-27T06:10:24","modified_gmt":"2014-04-27T06:10:24","slug":"cubas-first-mosque-approved","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sunnionline.us\/english\/2014\/04\/27\/3583\/","title":{"rendered":"Cuba\u2019s First Mosque Approved"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"images\/stories\/news3\/cubasFirst-Mosque-Approved.jpg\" border=\"0\" style=\"float: right; margin: 5px;\" \/>Fulfilling an old dream for Cuban Muslims, the government has approved plans for the country\u2019s first mosque with a courtesy of the Turkish government, following a visit by a delegation from Turkey&#8217;s Religious Affairs Foundation to the Caribbean island.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>  <!--more-->  <\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cWe thought the mosque would fit perfectly in Havana\u2019s historic district with the neighborhood\u2019s European architecture,\u201d Yuksel Sezgin, press adviser for Turkey\u2019s Religious Affairs Foundation (TDV), a branch of the country\u2019s top government-run religious organization, told Vocative on Friday, April 25.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The dream mosque was approved following a visit by TDV delegation to the Cuban department of religious affairs last week.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Designed after the famous Ortakoy mosque in Istanbul, the mosque is being built to serve the city&#8217;s 3,500 Muslims and will be complete within a year.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">According to the plans, the Havana mosque will be 32,300 square feet and have the capacity to serve 500 people.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Land for the mosque has already been allocated in the city&#8217;s Old Havana district.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">According to TDV officials, the 19th century design of Ortakoy mosque was suggested to fit in nicely with the architecture of the surrounding area.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">With no mosque available currently, most Cuban Muslims pray in their homes or, on Fridays, in the living room of Pedro Lazo Torre, the leader of Havana\u2019s Muslim community.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Luis Mesa Delmonte, a Cuban professor working on Middle Eastern studies at El Colegio de Mexico in Mexico City, says President Raul Castro\u2019s government approved the mosque project as part of Cuba\u2019s wider effort to inch open the Communist system.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cThe Cuban government approved the project some years ago, but the idea was to build one with national resources,\u201d Delmonte said over email.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cIt seems to me that the very difficult economic conditions the island is facing won\u2019t help in that direction.\u201d<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The plan is part of a wider project by the TDV in building mosques for Muslims who live in the Caribbean.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">A similar project in Haiti is due to be complete by the end of this year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Source:<em><strong> OnIslam<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Fulfilling an old dream for Cuban Muslims, the government has approved plans for the country\u2019s first mosque with a courtesy of the Turkish government, following a visit by a delegation from Turkey&#8217;s Religious Affairs Foundation to the Caribbean island.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[36],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-3583","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-c102-muslim-minorities"],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.6 -
