{"id":3178,"date":"2013-12-08T07:10:54","date_gmt":"2013-12-08T07:10:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/localhost\/wp3\/?p=3178"},"modified":"2013-12-08T07:10:54","modified_gmt":"2013-12-08T07:10:54","slug":"pro-morsi-protest-women-freed-after-egypt-court-ruling","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sunnionline.us\/english\/2013\/12\/08\/3178\/","title":{"rendered":"Pro-Morsi protest women freed after Egypt court ruling"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"images\/stories\/news3\/egypt-woman.jpg\" border=\"0\" width=\"309\" height=\"173\" style=\"float: right; margin: 5px;\" \/>Fourteen women jailed in Egypt over a protest in support of ousted President Mohammed Morsi have been freed after an appeal court ruling.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>  <!--more-->  <\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Seven juveniles jailed over the protest last month in Alexandria have also been released, on three months&#8217; probation.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The women&#8217;s 11-year sentence was cut to one year, suspended.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Human rights groups had attacked the convictions &#8211; on charges of belonging to a terrorist group, obstructing traffic, sabotage and using force.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">One campaigner described it as madness.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Reducing the sentences on Saturday, Judge Sharif Hafiz nevertheless convicted the 14 women of three counts relating to violence during the protest.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The women&#8217;s lawyer said they would appeal against the new sentence too.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Hefty sentences<\/strong><\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">For the appeal hearing, the 14 women appeared inside a special cage in the Alexandria courtroom dressed in prison-issue white and holding red roses.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">They had written the word &#8220;freedom&#8221; on their palms. Their supporters in the courtroom chanted, &#8220;God is great&#8221;, as the verdicts were announced.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The women&#8217;s lawyer, Ahmed al-Hamrawy, urged the court to acquit them, arguing there was no evidence against them.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">&#8220;Even in Mubarak&#8217;s era there were morals,&#8221; he said. &#8220;Egypt&#8217;s women and girls were a red line and they weren&#8217;t placed on trial.&#8221;<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">In November, the women and girls took part in an early morning demonstration in support of Mr Morsi.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Relatives say it was the first protest by the group &#8211; called the 7am Movement &#8211; and that it was peaceful.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Prosecutors had accused the women of fighting with knives and throwing stones during clashes that erupted at the protest, AFP news agency reports.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The father of a 15-year-old girl told the BBC he would take legal action to have the conviction quashed as his daughter and her mother were innocent passers-by.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The women had expected to be sentenced to a month in jail at most at their trial last month.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Their original sentence was longer than that given to some convicted killers, says the BBC&#8217;s Orla Guerin in Cairo.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The verdict was condemned by human rights campaigners in Egypt as blatantly political, our correspondent says.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Hundreds of people have also been killed in clashes since July when Mr Morsi&#8217;s removal sparked widespread protests.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Source:<\/span> <em><strong>BBC News<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Fourteen women jailed in Egypt over a protest in support of ousted President Mohammed Morsi have been freed after an appeal court ruling.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[1],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-3178","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-uncategorized"],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.6 -
