British Prime Minister David Cameron on Thursday said he accepted parliament\u2019s vote after he lost his motion for a strike on Syria.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe Americans don\u2019t need the British in the military sense, but they need them politically,\u201d Adel Darwish, political analyst and author of \u201cThe Edge of War,\u201d told Al Arabiya.<\/span><\/p>\n

While Cameron has a \u201croyal prerogative\u201d to launch a military strike without parliamentary approval, \u201cthe Iraq legacy\u201d will stop him acting unilaterally, Darwish added.<\/span><\/p>\n

Cameron\u2019s predecessor Tony Blair \u201cmisled parliament. When it discussed Syria and Bashr al-Assad, [late Iraqi President] Saddam Hussein\u2019s name was mentioned five times,\u201d making Cameron less likely to override the vote, Darwish said.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe UK vote is a terrible blow for the coalition of the volunteers against Assad,\u201d said Christian Mallard, France 3 TV\u2019s senior foreign political analyst. \u201cHow is it going to be feasible to have the coalition without the British?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Without British military involvement, \u201cthe coalition will weaken,\u201d said Mallard, highlighting its vital role in operations against Libya\u2019s late leader Muammar Qaddafi in 2011, and helping the French military combat al-Qaeda in northern Mali in 2013.<\/span><\/p>\n

However, despite Britain being an important U.N. Security Council member and a political heavyweight, \u201cthe United States is capable of striking Syria on its own militarily,\u201d said Paris-based political analyst Kamal Tarabey.<\/span><\/p>\n

The decision will most likely be made without U.N. consent, as permanent Security Council members Russia and China are expected to continue vetoing any resolution against the Assad regime, Tarabey added.<\/span><\/p>\n

The United States has the political and military backing of France, the Arab Gulf countries, Turkey and Canada, he added. <\/span><\/p>\n

Washington has bases in Turkey, Saudi Arabia and Qatar to launch strikes against Syria.<\/span><\/p>\n

While Iraq\u2019s legacy pushed the British parliament to vote no regarding Syria, it has prompted the United States to plan for a \u201climited military\u201d attack, the New York Times reported administration officials as saying on Thursday.<\/span><\/p>\n

The United States does not want Syria to disintegrate like Iraq, said Tarabey, adding that Washington only wants to weaken the regime to create a balance of power between it and rebels.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe strike could weaken the regime, and compel it to succumb to conditions at the Geneva II meeting,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Geneva conference was launched last year to resolve Syria\u2019s conflict politically.<\/span><\/p>\n

In mid-August, Russia said a proposed Geneva II conference was unlikely to take place before October due to a busy diplomatic schedule.<\/span><\/p>\n

U.S. President Barack Obama has long mulled military options regarding Syria, but some analysts have criticized the planned strike as lacking in detail.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThis operation doesn\u2019t have guaranteed results,\u201d Tarabey said.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Americans are \u201cclueless,\u201d and \u201cdon\u2019t know what they\u2019re doing,\u201d said Darwish, adding that the United States \u201ccan\u2019t win by air power alone.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The U.S. Navy has moved a fifth destroyer into the eastern Mediterranean Sea in preparation for the strike, Pentagon officials said. <\/span><\/p>\n

Each ship contains dozens of Tomahawk cruise missiles.<\/span><\/p>\n
