A United Nations official, Vijay Nambiar, has said that the houses and mosques of Rohingya Muslims in Myanmar have been targeted with \u201cbrutal efficiency\u201d in recent attacks. <\/p>\n
The statement came on Tuesday by Nambiar, a special advisor to the UN secretary general on Myanmar, who toured the country after the latest round of attacks by extremist Buddhists on March 20, in which over 40 Rohingya Muslims were killed in the city of Meiktila.<\/p>\n
The New Light of Myanmar newspaper reported on Tuesday that soldiers found the body remains of eight other people in buildings that had been set on fire by the extremist groups in Meiktila. Myanmar\u2019s President Thein Sein on Friday declared a state of emergency in the city.<\/p>\n
“There are \u2026 thieves who steal from burnt buildings,” said a Muslim man.<\/p>\n
On Monday other attacks targeting houses and mosques were reported in towns near Meiktila including Oh the Kone, Tatkone and Yamenthin.<\/p>\n
“It seemed to have been done, in a sense, in almost a kind of brutal efficiency,” said Nambiar at the UN headquarters.<\/p>\n
During his visit to Myanmar, the UN envoy met with President Thein Sein and visited the shelters in Meiktila, where nearly 9,000 Rohingya Muslims have resorted to for protection against the attackers.<\/p>\n
“Most of the people I spoke to tended to suggest the attacks were perpetrated by people they did not really recognize, and they may have been outsiders. But clearly they were targeted,” said Nambiar.<\/p>\n
Following the hike in violence against Muslims, Myanmar\u2019s officials have imposed curfews in three towns within a 150 kilometer radius of Rangoon, where Muslims\u2019 mosques, shops and houses have been attacked by Buddhists.<\/p>\n
The Buddhist extremists frequently attack Rohingyas and set fire to their homes. This comes while the Myanmar government has been accused of failing to protect the Muslim minority.<\/p>\n
Myanmar\u2019s Army forces allegedly provided the extremist Buddhists with containers of petrol for torching the houses of Muslim villagers, who were then forced to flee.<\/p>\n
Rohingyas are said to be Muslim descendants of Persian, Turkish, Bengali, and Pathan origin, who migrated to Myanmar as early as the 8th century.<\/p>\n
Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch have issued separate statements, calling on Myanmar to take action to protect the Rohingya Muslim population against extremist Buddhists.<\/p>\n
