The Taliban has likened the planned withdrawal of U.S. forces from Afghanistan to America\u2019s pullout from Vietnam, calling it a \u201cdeclare victory and run\u201d strategy in a statement on Wednesday.
The announcement by the militant group said the ongoing transfer of security operations from U.S. troops to Afghan forces was merely a retreat similar to the American withdrawal from South Vietnam prior to the communist victory there in 1975.<\/p>\n
American-led NATO troops are scheduled to pull out of Afghanistan by the end of 2014. However the U.S. will leave behind a residual force and other NATO countries have pledged continuing support of the Kabul government.<\/p>\n
\u201cThey want to flee from Afghanistan just as they turned tail and ran from Vietnam\u201d, the Taliban statement said. \u201cWhen America faced utter destruction in Vietnam, they came up with the formula \u2018declare victory and run\u2019 and want to utilize the formula of \u2018transfer security and run\u2019 here in Afghanistan\u201d.<\/p>\n
The United States withdrew is combat troops from South Vietnam in 1973, leaving South Vietnamese forces to face the North Vietnamese and Viet Cong who marched into the capital, Saigon, two years later.<\/p>\n
