{"id":2536,"date":"2012-12-23T15:03:13","date_gmt":"2012-12-23T15:03:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/localhost\/wp3\/?p=2536"},"modified":"2012-12-23T15:03:13","modified_gmt":"2012-12-23T15:03:13","slug":"patriots-in-turkey-defensive-only-will-not-support-no-fly-zone-nato","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sunnionline.us\/english\/2012\/12\/23\/2536\/","title":{"rendered":"Patriots in Turkey defensive only, will not support no-fly zone: NATO"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"images\/stories\/news2\/turky-rocket fire.jpg\" border=\"0\" align=\"right\" \/>The NATO deployment of Patriot air defense systems in Turkey will be defensive only and will not support a no-fly zone or any offensive operation, the North Atlantic alliance said in a statement on Sunday.   <!--more-->  <br \/>\u201cIts aim is to deter any threats to Turkey, to defend Turkey\u2019s population and territory and to de-escalate the crisis on NATO\u2019s south-eastern border,\u201d the NATO statement added.<\/p>\n<p>The bloc said the decision for missile deployment was taken following \u201ca military assessment by the Allies involved and NATO\u2019s Military Authorities.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGermany, the Netherlands and the United States have offered to provide two Patriot batteries each. Germany will deploy its batteries to Kahramanmaras, the Netherlands will deploy its batteries to Adana, and the United States will deploy its batteries to Gaziantep,\u201d according to the statement.<\/p>\n<p>Turkey, a NATO member, has repeatedly scrambled jets along the countries&#8217; joint frontier and has responded in kind when shells from Syria came down inside its borders, fanning fears that the civil war could spread to destabilize the region.<\/p>\n<p>Iran opposes the installation of NATO missiles as Western interference in the region and has said it could lead to a \u201cworld war.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe installation of Patriot missiles in Turkey plays no role in establishing Turkey\u2019s security and this harms the country of Turkey,\u201d Iranian Defense Minister Ahmad Vahidi said on Saturday, according to the Iranian Students\u2019 News Agency (ISNA).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe West has always pursued its viewpoints and interests and we disagree with the presence of Western countries in regional interactions,\u201d he added.<br \/>Meanwhile, Russia said it was installing its advanced air defense systems S-400 near the border with Turkey.<\/p>\n<p>Russian Col.
