Egypt’s ex-President Hosni Mubarak was sentenced to life in prison on Saturday, June 2, after a court convicted him on charges of complicity in the killing of protesters during last year’s uprising that forced him from power. “The people want the judiciary cleansed” (of Mubarak-era officials), people in the court chanted, television images showed, Reuters reported.
One man held up a sign calling for Mubarak to be executed, others chanted for a death sentence.
Former Interior Minister Habib al-Adly also received a life sentence over the deaths of demonstrators.
Mubarak and his two sons – Gamal and Alaa – were acquitted on separate charges of corruption.
Hussein Salem, business tycoon who fled to Spain, was found not guilty of corruption.
The sentence also included acquitting six other senior police officers, including four of Adli’s former deputies.
They are Hassan Abd El Rahman, Deputy Interior Minister and Head of State Security; Adli Fayed, Deputy Interior Minister and Head of General Security; Ahmed Ramzy, Head of Central Security Forces; and Ismail al-Shaer, former director of security for Cairo.
The other two are Interior Ministry officials Osama al-Marassy and Omar Faramawy, both directors of security for the Greater Cairo provinces.
Judge Ahmed Refaat insisted the 10-month trial had been a fair one, and said Egyptian people had suffered 30 years of darkness under Mubarak’s rule.
Before the hearing began, Egyptian state television showed Mubarak arriving at the court on the outskirts of Cairo in a helicopter from the military-run hospital where he has been held in custody.
He was transferred to a white ambulance on a stretcher, wearing sunglasses. He had his arms behind his head. A sheet covered the lower half of his body.
Piles of bound court papers were stacked next to the judges’ bench, the television footage showed. Hundreds of police surrounded the court set up at the Police Academy on Cairo’s outskirts.<\/p>\n
