The East London Mosque & London Muslim Centre on Sunday hosted a mass gathering of reciters of the Holy Qur\u2019\u0101n. The Qur\u2019\u0101n Revision Day, as part of the Qur\u2019\u0101n Revision Project, saw London\u2019s largest gathering of Huff\u0101dh and Qur\u2019\u0101n competitions, in the capital\u2019s largest Islamic institution.
Over 150 aspiring Huffadh and over 50 teachers from across the UK convened in the East London Mosque where a number of chapters, or Juz\u2019, as well as the whole Qur\u2019\u0101n was recited by respected students.
\u201cThis is not Makkah, this is not Medina, this is not (an) Arab or Muslim country. This is the United Kingdom, this is London. The biggest Qur\u2019\u0101n competition in the East London Mosque,\u201d [1] one attendee said.
The aim of the Qur\u2019\u0101n Revision Project in launching the Qur\u2019\u0101n Revision Day is to showcase how the Holy Qur\u2019\u0101n is memorised by its students and the role teachers play in aiding their students in memorising the holy book.
\u201cThe scenes are indescribable. They are scenes that breed deep emotion. They conjure scenes of Mauritania and Medina.\u201d
\u201cThis is the first time it\u2019s being done in the UK; the brothers doing it were inspired by the Yawm al-Himmah (Day of Aspiration) or Yawm al-Inj\u0101z (Day of Great Completion) that we have in Saudi Arabia,\u201d he added.
The gathering is not exclusive to one race or group, rather it is inclusive of peoples from various backgrounds, social groups, and nationalities. The message embodies that of the Qur\u2019\u0101n and our Beloved Prophet Muhammad (\u1e62all\u0101hu \u2018alayhi wa sallam) itself \u2013 that as Muslims we are one nation and one body, indivisible by notions of race, ethnicity, and nationality.
\u201cIt really puts you into a special place. You have over 150 Huff\u0101dh reciting to over 50 teachers from the UK\u2014and it\u2019s just Qur\u2019\u0101n from Fajr until Isha, you\u2019re only stopping for Sal\u0101h, your meals are 15-30 minutes max and then you are back in and it\u2019s full steam ahead.\u201d Shaykh Sajid Umar said.
\u201cSome are doing 5 Juz\u2019, some are doing 10 Juz\u2019, some are doing 15, some are doing the entire 30,\u201d he added.
Throughout the day a number of students completed the whole Qur\u2019\u0101n, a beautiful yet formidable, blessed feat.
The East London Mosque hosted the first session of the Qur\u2019\u0101n Revision Day and it is understood that many more will be hosted across various Islamic institutions in the capital as well as across the UK, insh\u0101\u2019All\u0101h.
\u201cIn the morning when we came there were students and teachers who were tired, having only had as little as two hours\u2019 sleep,\u201d Shaykh Sajid remarked in the late afternoon. \u201cBut everyone is still going\u2014the barakah of the Qur\u2019\u0101n and its environment honestly gives you strength.\u201d
