Question <\/strong>
My husband and I were experiencing problems in our marriage. My husbands and mines knowledge was limited as to what constitutes a divorce in Islam. I truly believed that one divorce was constituted by my husband saying \u2018talaaq\u2019 three times and as such had the opportunity to reconcile within the iddah period should that be the case. On that basis, my husband uttered the words \u2018talaaq\u2019 three times with the intention of it constituting one divorce. You should also note that I was on my menses at that time. We evaluated our relationship and within one month, me and my husband decided to get back together and reconciled. At this time, we had been advised that my husbands utterance of the word \u2018talaaq\u2019 three times constituted three separate divorces and as such we were no longer husband and wife with no opportunity to reconcile. We are unable to fathom this as due to our limited knowledge and my husbands intention not to irrevocably divorce me at that time that this looks the case based on what we have been told. Had we have known this at the relevant time, my husband would never have said the word talaq three times. We would appreciate some much needed guidance on our circumstances as the intention was not to pronounce three talaaqs, just one with the opportunity to get back together which we have now done.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-sal\u0101mu \u2018alaykum wa-rahmatull\u0101hi wa-barak\u0101tuh.
At the outset, we wish to point out that the issue of Talaq pertains to Halal and Haram. A fatwa is an opinion that is given according to the question posed. A Fatwa does not make Haram into Halal and vice-versa. Your husband should fear Allah Ta\u2019ala and decide accordingly.
In principle, if one issues his wife three Talaqs with different\/separate words, for example; Talaq, Talaq, Talaq, without any intention, then that constitutes a Talaq Mughallaz (a permanently irrevocable divorce).
If he uttered three Talaqs in one word, for example he says; I issue you three Talaqs, that too will constitute a Talaq Mughallaz (a permanently irrevocable divorce).
However, if he uttered three divorces with different\/separate words and he clearly intended to issue only one Talaq, but repeated the remaining two words as emphasis and not to issue a separate Talaq, then in this case one Talaq will take place.

If the intention was clearly to issue only one divorce, then only one Talaq will take place.
However, we reiterate, your husband knows better what was his intention at the time of issuing the divorce. He should fear Allah Ta\u2019ala as Allah Ta\u2019ala knows his intention and he should decide accordingly.
Considering the complexity of your situation, we advise you to contact your local Ulama Judicial Committee who may even ask your husband to take an oath that his intention of the three Talaqs was one Talaq. [i]
Until then, you must severe all contact with your husband.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
