“He first watched television for some time and then immersed himself in prayers and Quran recitation until the dawn prayers,” a security source told the Anadolu Ageny on Tuesday, November 5.
Former President Morsi was transferred to Borg Al-Arab jail in Alexandria last Monday after appearing in court for the first time since his removal on July 3.
The trial got underway as Morsi and seven other defendants were accused of inciting the murder of two protesters outside Ittihadiya’s presidential palace in December 2012.
Morsi, who appeared in a blue jacket and grey trousers, told the judge at his trial in Cairo that he is “the legitimate president” of Egypt.
After several hours, the court decided to delay the trial much further until January 8, 2014 to examine the documents related to the case.
According to the source, Morsi was flown later to jail, to be imprisoned in a two-room detention in the Borg al-Arab prison hospital.
Later on, he had an hour meeting with the prison administration during which the prison regulations were read out to him.
“As a former president you would be kept away from criminal prisoners and under tight protection,” one officer reportedly told Morsi.
The former president was then given the prison uniform he would be using during the entire period of his detention.
The Interior Ministry on Tuesday denied reports that Morsi suffered medical problems after the court proceedings or was on hunger strike.
In a statement, the ministry said Morsi was admitted to the prison hospital for routine medical checkups before being moved to his detention cell.
Borg Al-Arab prison is the first time in which the whereabouts of former president were known.
Morsi has been held at an undisclosed location since his July 3 ouster by Egypt’s powerful military establishment.
