“The National Alliance for the Defense of Legitimacy calls on the Egyptian people to assemble on Friday to reclaim their stolen revolution and regain their freedom,” the coalition declared in a Wednesday statement.
The pro-Morsi and anti-coup alliance called on supporters to “continue peaceful [protest] activities until the January 25 Revolution [which ended the regime of president Hosni Mubarak in early 2011] is reclaimed.”
The coalition added that its civil disobedience drive would begin on Friday, August 30, as an “effective measure against the coup leaders to force them to end the coup and achieve revolutionary demands.”
The alliance, which is led by Egypt’s Muslim Brotherhood, plans to hold a press conference on Thursday to address the latest political developments.
“The Egyptian people tasted freedom and defeated fear when they converged on public squares and imposed their will during the January revolution,” it stated.
On Tuesday, the pro-Morsi coalition called for mass rallies on Friday with the aim of “reclaiming the January revolution.”
“Egyptians will not give up their demands until the coup is reversed, the putschists are punished for their crimes… and democracy is restored,” the coalition declared in a statement.
