Amira al-Aarour’s military experience working with her father helped her join the FSA ranks where she currently holds the post of the deputy commander of the FSA’s brigade in Aleppo.
Aarour said she received military experience when she was just a child as she accompanied her father to several training camps where he taught her how to shoot.
She also said that at first, men among the FSA found it difficult to accept taking orders from a woman, adding, however, that with time they accepted the idea.
Several Syrian women had joined the rebels fighting the regime of Bashar al-Assad such as engineer Thouwyba Kanfani who traveled from Canada to Syria to fight Assad’s forces and who had announced that she joined the rebels via a video.
