Car bomb kills one in southeast Turkey

A car bomb exploded in the southeastern province of Hakkari on Sunday as a police vehicle was passing by, killing one person and wounding 16 others.
The blast occurred in the Şemdinli district on Turkey’s border with Iraq and Iran, a scene of frequent conflict in recent months between Turkish security forces and the terrorist Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK).

The injured were taken to the Şemdinli and Yüksekova state hospitals for treatment and two of them were believed to be in serious condition.

The electricity supply in the town was cut off after the blast, according to initial reports.

The blast is thought to have been orchestrated by the PKK, as it has carried out similar attacks in the past in the area.

More than 40,000 people have been killed in the PKK’s conflict with Turkey since the terrorists took up arms in 1984 with the aim of carving out a state in the mainly Kurdish southeast of the country.

The PKK is designated a terrorist group by Turkey, the United States and European Union.
