Ex-Fatah member residence raided

Palestinian forces have attacked the residence of former Fatah member Mohammed Dahlan who is under investigation on charges of murder and corruption.
According to witnesses at al-Tirah neighborhood, Palestinian forces surrounded Dahlan’s house in Ramallah at 7:00 a.m. (0500 GMT) and forced their way in and seized his assets, AFP reported on Thursday.
The forces removed weapons, files and computers from the residence, while Dahlan was apparently locked in one of the rooms, witnesses said.
On June 12, the Fatah Central Committee (FCC) decided to expel Dahlan from the party over allegations of financial corruption and murder.
The decision for his expulsion was made over charges that Dahlan was plotting against acting Palestinian Authority (PA) Chief Mahmoud Abbas. It must be approved by a two-third majority of the Fatah Revolutionary Council.
The latest incident took place a day after officials at the FCC said they had decided to refer Dahlan’s case to the attorney general and the anti-corruption commission.
On Wednesday, a Fatah court rejected an appeal by Dahlan against his expulsion from the party.
In 1994, Dahlan became head of the PA intelligence and security sector and embarked on taking a series of measures to oppress Palestinians who opposed talks with Israel. During the same year, he killed some 40 members of the Hamas movement in the Gaza Strip.
The former Fatah member made numerous lengthy trips to the United Kingdom and some sources said he underwent vigorous training under British experts who primed him for taking over as the PA chief.
An embarrassing discovery of huge money transfers to Dahlan’s accounts in UK, Israeli and Swiss banks marked his fall from grace in the eyes of the first generation of Fatah members.
