Mubarak’s Former Ruling Party Dissolved

An Egyptian court ordered on Saturday, April 16, that the political party of the former President Hosni Mubarak should be dissolved, meeting a major demand of the protest movement that ousted Mubarak’s entire regime.

The Higher Administrative Court in Cairo also ordered the liquidation of the assets of the National Democratic Party (NDP), with the funds to be returned to the state.
“The presented appeals are accepted in form and subject to freeze the National Democratic Party and confiscate its funds to the state,” the court ruling said.
Pro-democracy activists had increasingly called for the dismantling of the party, accusing it of being a main asset in Egypt corruption over the past 30 years.
Today’s verdict shows that the military was eager to move quickly on protesters demands after a dramatic rise in tensions last week.
The military has enjoyed broad support since it took over from Mubarak on February 11 following massive protests that raged across Egypt for 18 days.
After taking power, the military council dissolved parliament, suspended the constitution and promised to lift the state of emergency before the elections in September.
The campaign against Mubarak-era figures has resulted in the arrest of once untouchable figures including the former interior minister and other ministers who held economic portfolios and are accused of corruption.
Fathi Sorour, the former speaker of Egyptian the People’s Assembly, was the latest high-profile figure to be arrested.
The NDP dominated Egyptian politics since it was set up by Mubarak’s predecessor, Anwar el-Sadat, in 1978.
The party’s headquarters were torched during the protests that led Mubarak to step down in February, and its supporters were blamed for some acts of thuggery during the demonstrations.

Military Hospital

Meanwhile, Egypt’s prosecutor said that ousted President will be moved to a military hospital until he is well enough to face interrogation in a corruption investigation.
Senior security officials confirmed that Mubarak was likely to be moved to a military hospital just outside Cairo within a few hours.
“Hosni Mubarak will be transported to the International Medical Center along the Cairo-Ismailia road, given his need for special medical care,” a senior security source told Reuters.
Earlier this week, Mubarak and his sons were detained for 15 days for investigation.
They were accused of incitement to open fire at demonstrators during an 18-day popular uprising that ousted the aging Egyptian leader.
Little is known about what ails the 82-year-old Mubarak, who was admitted to a hospital in the Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh on Tuesday, shortly after he was questioned by prosecutors over corruption allegations.
Mubarak’s sons, Gamal and Alaa Mubarak, have also been added to a list of those detained and have been moved to Torah prison on the outskirts of Cairo including presidential aides, ex-ministers, former party officials and executives are held.
Earlier, a spokesman for the prosecution told the state news agency MENA that Mubarak’s health did not, as yet, permit his transfer to the medical facility at Torah prison.
“But it is imperative the prosecutor be informed once his health improves so that he can be transferred to prison,” the MENA report said.
