A non-UN-sanctioned drone attack by the US military in Pakistan’s North Waziristan tribal district has killed six people, Pakistani security officials say.The early Monday attack also left two other people injured.
The US has carried out many drone attacks on Pakistan’s tribal areas since 2008, but there has been a significant increase in the drone attacks over the past few months.
Earlier this year, The Long War Journal, a US website tracking the strikes, pointed out that the assaults have not killed the main militant leaders.
The aerial assaults, initiated by former US president George W. Bush, have been escalated under President Barack Obama.
Washington claims the airstrikes target militants, but most of the attacks result in civilian casualties.
Since August 2008, about one thousand people have been killed in about 100 attacks by US drones in tribal areas of Pakistan. Over 90 percent of the victims were civilians.
The issue of civilian casualties has strained relations between Islamabad and Washington, with the Pakistani government repeatedly objecting to the attacks.
However, Pakistani officials believe that the militants have shifted their operations from Waziristan and the Orakzai Agency to the Kurram Agency.
