25 Afghans killed in US-led airstrike

US-led forces have targeted a mosque in Helmand province in southern Afghanistan, killing at least 25 civilians during the airstrike, Afghan officials say.

Local officials said that the attack was carried out by US-led forces on Monday in Maigan village of Baghran district and added that the casualty figures could increase.
NATO officials have confirmed the airstrike, but denied any civilians death.
“People are very angry,” Salah Ayap, an eyewitness, told the Associated Press on Monday.
The attack comes a day after a US-led airstrike resulted in the death of four more civilians, including an Afghan child, in the central province of Wardak.
Civilian casualties caused by the US-led foreign forces have been a major source of tension between Afghan President Hamid Karzai and NATO.
The attacks have killed large numbers of civilians since the 2001 US-led invasion of Afghanistan and the subsequent occupation of the country.
Hundreds of civilians have lost their lives in NATO airstrikes and ground operations in different parts of the war-ravaged country over the past months, but the air raids have proved particularly deadly for the civilian population.
The loss of civilian lives at the hands of foreign forces has dramatically intensified anti-American sentiments in Afghanistan.
