Four US soldiers have been killed in a Taliban bomb attack in southern Afghanistan, a NATO statement says.
NATO’s International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) said on Saturday that the Americans were killed by a Taliban-style improvised explosive device in the war-torn country.
AFP quoted an ISAF spokeswoman as confirming that the dead troops are American. The US-led alliance did not provide further details of the incident.
The death toll of US-led troops in Afghanistan jumped closer to the 2,000 mark since the beginning of US-led invasion in 2001. According to an AFP tally, 1,204 of the dead soldiers are Americans.
Around 400 foreign soldiers have been killed in combat in the first half of 2010, making this year the deadliest so far for US-led forces in Afghanistan.
Some 150,000 US-led troops are currently stationed in Afghanistan. A further 10,000 troops are expected to be deployed to the war-ravaged country in the coming weeks.
The rising foreign casualties have sparked anger among the public in the countries allied with the US in Afghanistan.
