A fierce gunbattle between Israeli troops and Palestinian resistance fighters leaves one member of Islamic Jihad dead and three others wounded in the Gaza Strip.
The incident occurred early Tuesday when a group of Israeli soldiers tried to enter the Bureij refugee camp in central Gaza, Islamic Jihad’s armed wing, the Al-Quds Brigades, said.
An Israeli army spokeswoman confirmed the incident, saying there were no casualties on the Israeli side. But the Palestinians said some Israeli soldiers were also injured in the exchange of gunfire.
Four Israeli tanks and two military bulldozers entered about 400 meters into central Gaza while more armored vehicles were deployed on the Israeli side of the border, witnesses said.
The Israeli army sent a helicopter to the area following the incident and fired tank shells into the Palestinian coastal enclave.
