{"id":328,"date":"2010-05-23T18:03:52","date_gmt":"2010-05-23T18:03:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/localhost\/wp3\/?p=328"},"modified":"2010-05-23T18:03:52","modified_gmt":"2010-05-23T18:03:52","slug":"pakistan-blocks-800-web-pages-over-blasphemy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/sunnionline.us\/english\/2010\/05\/23\/328\/","title":{"rendered":"Pakistan blocks 800 web pages over &#8216;blasphemy&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin-left: 5px; float: right;\" alt=\"facebook_ban\" src=\"images\/stories\/news\/facebook_ban.jpg\" width=\"216\" height=\"183\" \/>ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has blocked 800 web pages and URLs to limit access to \u201cblasphemous\u201d material, extending a crackdown that has already banned access to Facebook and YouTube, an official said Saturday.<\/div>\n<p>  <!--more-->  <\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Pakistan Telecommunications Authority (PTA) banned access to Facebook, YouTube and other links, which included restricted access to Wikipedia, in view of what it called \u201cgrowing sacrilegious content\u201d this week.<br \/> \u201cAt least 800 individual web pages and URLs have been blocked since the government&#8217;s orders to shut Facebook and YouTube,\u201d Wahaj us Siraj, a spokesman for the Internet Service Providers Association of Pakistan told AFP.<br \/>Siraj&#8217;s remarks came hours after the Facebook user who organised an \u201cEveryone Draw Mohammed Day\u201d competition to promote \u201cfreedom of expression\u201devidently took down the page along with a separate blog about the campaign.<br \/>The competition sparked angry protests in Pakistan, a Muslim country of 170 million, although members of a well-educated, moderate elite expressed disappointment on the blanket ban on the wildly popular websites.<br \/>Siraj said that any decision to restore Facebook and YouTube access would be taken by the PTA.<br \/>The offending Facebook page attracted 105,000 fans &#8211; and five pages of crude manipulated pictures and caricatures.
