{"id":3183,"date":"2013-12-09T07:00:29","date_gmt":"2013-12-09T07:00:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/localhost\/wp3\/?p=3183"},"modified":"2013-12-09T07:00:29","modified_gmt":"2013-12-09T07:00:29","slug":"allah-is-al-ahad-the-one-and-only","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/sunnionline.us\/english\/2013\/12\/09\/3183\/","title":{"rendered":"Allah is al-Ahad \u2013 the One and Only"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"images\/stories\/muslims\/al_ahad.jpg\" border=\"0\" style=\"float: right; margin: 5px;\" \/>Allah says: \u201c<em>And your God is One God; there is no god save Him, the Beneficent, the Merciful<\/em>.\u201d [S\u016brah al-Baqarah: 163] <\/span><\/p>\n<p>  <!--more-->  <\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Allah also says: \u201c<em>Say: He is Allah, the One<\/em>.\u201d [S\u016brah al-Ikhl\u0101s: 1] <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">In the first of these verses, Allah is referred to as al-W\u0101hid (the One), whereas in the second verse, He is referred to as al-Ahad (the One). What is the difference between these two names? <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Both names share a common etymological origin, and both refer to \u201coneness\u201d. The word w\u0101hid is simply the Arabic word for the number \u201cone\u201d. As a name of Allah, it refers to His being the one and only true God. It also refers to His being the First, before whom nothing existed. This in turn, communicates that no one deserves to be worshipped besides Allah, and that He has no partner in divinity. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The word ahad, by contrast, conveys an uncountable oneness. It is not one in a series. It cannot be added to or divided into fractions. Its stands for a singular, unique entity. Also, in Arabic grammatical usage, it is the form of the word \u201cone\u201d used to distinguish an individual from others, like in the phrase \u201cone of them\u201d in \u201cOnly one of them showed up.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Consequently, the name al-Ahad, it is more exclusive in its meaning than the name al-W\u0101hid, referring specifically to Allah\u2019s essence, communicating that Allah is absolutely singular in His essence and utterly unique in His attributes. No one is like Him in any way. As Allah says elsewhere in the Qur\u2019\u0101n: \u201c<em>There is nothing like unto Him, and He is the Seeing, the Hearing<\/em>.\u201d [S\u016brah al-Sh\u016br\u0101: 11] <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Allah\u2019s name al-W\u0101hid (the One) appears in twenty-two verses of the Qur\u2019\u0101n. The name al-Ahad appears only once, in the short chapter of the Qur\u2019an entitled al-Ikhl\u0101s: <\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><em>Say:<\/em> <em>He is Allah, the One. Allah, the Self-Subsisting. He begets not, nor is He begotten, and there is none like unto Him<\/em>. [S\u016brah al-Ikhl\u0101s: 1-4] <\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The name al-Ahad that appears in the chapter entitled al-Ikhl\u0101s is more emphatic and eloquent in expressing the concept of \u201coneness\u201d than the name al-W\u0101hid, though both names convey essentially the same meaning: \u201cthe One\u201d. Allah is the One and only Lord, the One and only Creator, the One and only Provider. He alone lives without dying. He alone gives life and causes death. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">He is the One (al-W\u0101hid) who has no partner. He is the One (al-Ahad) who is unique and incomparable in His attributes and His actions and in every way. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Allah alone is worthy of worship. All other worship is false. Our hearts should turn to Him alone in reverence and devotion, and in hope. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Allah is One in His names and attributes. Some names belong to Him alone, like the name Allah and the name al-Rahm\u0101n (the Beneficent). Other names might be used to describe human beings as well, like \u201cmerciful\u201d and \u201ckind\u201d. However, there is no comparison between the application of these names on the human level and their meaning with respect to Allah. No one is comparable to Allah. This is why Allah says: \u201c<em>He begets not, nor is He begotten, and there is none like unto Him<\/em>.\u201d [S\u016brah al-Ikhl\u0101s: 3-4] <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Allah also says: \u201c<em>Do you know of any who is worthy of His name<\/em>?\u201d [S\u016brah Maryam: 65]<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Source:<em><strong> IslamToday<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Allah says: \u201cAnd your God is One God;
