{"id":243,"date":"2010-04-28T07:15:20","date_gmt":"2010-04-28T07:15:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/localhost\/wp3\/?p=243"},"modified":"2010-04-28T07:15:20","modified_gmt":"2010-04-28T07:15:20","slug":"us-to-transfer-bagram-detainees","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/sunnionline.us\/english\/2010\/04\/28\/243\/","title":{"rendered":"US &#8216;to transfer Bagram detainees&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin-left: 5px; float: right;\" alt=\"bagram\" src=\"images\/stories\/news\/bagram.jpg\" width=\"265\" height=\"224\" \/>The US military has told Al Jazeera that it is negotiating with foreign governments to take non-Afghan prisoners from its controversial prison at the Bagram airbase outside Kabul, the Afghan capital.<\/div>\n<p>  <!--more-->  <\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">Vice-Admiral Robert Harward of the Joint Task Force 435, who is head of detainee operations, said &#8220;a very, very small population&#8221; of foreigners are held at Bagram.<br \/>&#8220;We&#8217;re currently co-ordinating with those governments,&#8221; he told Al Jazeera.<br \/>&#8220;We&#8217;re working to move them [the detainees] back into the legal systems of their countries.&#8221;<br \/>The US has promised to hand over the Bagram facility to Afghan authorities by the end of the year.<br \/>Al Jazeera&#8217;s James Bays, reporting from Kabul, said the Afghans wanted the foreign detainees transferred before they take over.<br \/>&#8220;The Afghans wouldn&#8217;t want to take control of these detainees when it came under Afghan control, and that&#8217;s why America is talking to some of the governments where these prisoners come from to see if they will take these prisoners,&#8221; he said.<br \/>&#8220;At the same time, since the beginning of the year, there has been a series of releases of Afghan prisoners, substantially reducing the size of the prison population.&#8221;<br \/>Bays said a US source and an Afghan official had put the number of foreign nationals held at Bagram to about 30 and 60 respectively.<br \/>The Bagram prison was established after the US-led invasion of Afghanistan in 2001.<br \/>Two inmates were killed while being interrogated in 2002, and other former inmates have claimed they have been abused and tortured.<\/p>\n<p>Source: Al Jazeera<\/p><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The US military has told Al Jazeera that it is negotiating with foreign governments to take non-Afghan prisoners from its controversial prison at the Bagram airbase outside Kabul, the Afghan capital.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[32],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-243","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-c59-islamic-world"],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.6 -
