{"id":1430,"date":"2011-03-31T15:35:38","date_gmt":"2011-03-31T15:35:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/localhost\/wp3\/?p=1430"},"modified":"2011-03-31T15:35:38","modified_gmt":"2011-03-31T15:35:38","slug":"german-islam-conference-under-fire","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/sunnionline.us\/english\/2011\/03\/31\/1430\/","title":{"rendered":"German Islam Conference Under Fire"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin-left: 5px; float: right;\" alt=\"german_islam_conference\" src=\"images\/stories\/news\/german_islam_conference.jpg\" width=\"228\" height=\"177\" \/>A government-sponsored conference on Muslims in Germany has sparked a storm of criticism for focusing on security instead of tackling problems facing the sizable minority.<\/div>\n<p>  <!--more-->  <\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Islam Conference should not be &#8220;another instrument of security policy,&#8221; Muslim scholar Armina Omerika told Deutsche Welle on Wednesday, March 30.<br \/>He said interior minister Hans-Peter Friedrich&#8217;s security partnership idea promotes &#8220;the dubious culture of informing on other Muslims.&#8221;<br \/>A one-day conference was held in Germany on Tuesday to discuss the integration of German Muslims into society.<br \/>This year\u2019s event was scheduled to discuss poverty and low education among German Muslims and how to ease friction between Muslims and the German school system.<br \/>Instead, the event focused on security and what Muslims should do to report terror threats.<br \/>Interior minister called for Muslim leaders to report what he said \u201cradical\u201d sermons by imams and tell police about conversations that could pose a threat to the country.<br \/>&#8220;The Islam conference shouldn&#8217;t be a security conference in disguise,&#8221; Aiman Mazyek, head of the Central Council of Muslims (ZMD), said.<br \/>He questioned the benefits of the conference.<br \/>&#8220;I don&#8217;t know if this conference will happen again,\u201d Mazyek, who boycotted the conference since last year, said.<br \/> \u201cThere&#8217;s no substance there. The socially relevant themes are missing.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Discriminatory<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Critics warn that focusing on security stumble efforts to integrate German Muslims into society.<br \/>It was discriminatory to \u201cmake a security conference out of an Islam conference,\u201d said Sevim Dagdelen, immigration policy spokesperson for The Left.<br \/>Such an approach is more likely to breed exclusion than integration, she warned.<br \/>Germans were also critical of interior minister Hans-Peter Friedrich\u2019s insistence that Muslims were not part of German society.<br \/>&#8220;If you argue Muslims belong to Germany but not their religion, you throw the door wide open for Islamophobia,&#8221; said Bekir Alboga from the DITIB federation of mosques.<br \/>Friedrich stirred a storm earlier this month by saying that Islam has not history in Germany.
