Ahmed Mohamed, who was announced clinically dead earlier today, has succumbed to his injuries, his colleagues told Anadolu Agency, requesting anonymity.
He is the second university student to die in today’s protest.
Al-Azhar University students said security forces had returned to firing teargas into their dormitory after a hiatus of few hours, and were preventing students from entering or leaving the dormitory.
The students staged a protest to demand the release of colleagues who were arrested in similar protests over the past months.
They also demanded the reinstatement of colleagues dismissed by the university authorities for participating in demonstrations against the current army-backed interim authorities.
Al-Azhar University, a traditional stronghold of students affiliated with the Muslim Brotherhood of ousted president Mohamed Morsi, has seen almost daily demonstrations – which frequently turn violent – against Morsi’s ouster by the army last year.
Recurring clashes have left several students dead and scores injured.
