A Sunni cleric decries ban on Sunnis’ Eid prayers in Tehran

Mawlana Muhammad Hussein Gorgij, Sunni Khateeb of Azadshahr, denounced the ban on the Eid prayers of Sunnis in Tehran calling it ‘the biggest injustice that has taken place for Sunnis of Iran’. He was addressing the people on the Eid al-Adha day, Oct. 16, 2013.

Talking to hundreds of Sunni worshippers in the northern city of Azadshahr, he expressed his deep regret over the obstacles made by the security authorities to shut down the congregations for Eid prayers of Sunnis in some towns of the capital Tehran.

“Unfortunately, in some areas the authorities imposed their personal wishes and banned on two units of the prayers. I am really sorry for such people; it is the biggest injustice that has taken place for Sunnis of Iran,” Botshekan web portal quoted the Shaikh as saying.

The rector of Farouqiah seminary of Galikash city urged on the legal rights of minorities affirmed in the national constitution of Iran, Article 12, asking the authorities, “Some of the officials claimed Sunni worshippers must get permission for establishing prayers; does permission come from the sky so it takes time to arrive? It is in your authority, you can simply permit Sunnis to offer prayers; why you do not do so? It is unfair to forbid Sunnis from two units of the prayers!”

The prominent Sunni scholar concluded his points, “More than 80% of the Sunni voters have approved the president Rouhani as their president to get rid of such obstacles, to offer their rituals easily and their scholars could travel in the entire country without any limitations; regretfully still we observe the past restrictions.”
