Egypt arrests 8 Brotherhood members in fresh dragnet

Security forces on Tuesday arrested eight more members of the embattled Muslim Brotherhood in a new crackdown across several Egyptian provinces.

Three Brotherhood members were arrested overnight in the southern province of Beni Sueif on charges of “storming government facilities” following last month’s violent dispersal of two protest camps in Cairo set up by supporters of ousted President Mohamed Morsi.
Security forces also detained Hamdi al-Sayed Abdel-Fattah, the youth secretary of the Brotherhood’s Freedom and Justice Party, in the Upper Egyptian Minya province.
Another two Brotherhood members were arrested in the canal city of Suez and the southern province of Luxor, while two others were detained in the southern Fayoum province and the Nile Delta Sharqiya province.
Security forces also detained Hasan al-Beshbeshi, a former member of the centrist Strong Egypt Party led by former presidential candidate Abdel Moneim Abul-Fotouh.
Security forces also arrested two members of Egypt’s Gamaa Islamiya group in the southern Assiut province on charges of “storming and burning a police station, helping prisoners escape and seizing firearms.”
Egyptian authorities have unleashed a massive crackdown on Muslim Brotherhood leaders and members since the bloody August 14 dispersal of two pro-Morsi protest camps, in which hundreds of demonstrators were killed by security forces.
Since then, Egypt’s military-backed authorities have rounded up hundreds of the group’s senior and mid-ranking members, topped by Brotherhood leader Mohamed Badie and deputies Khairat al-Shater and Rashad al-Bayoumi.
