The recitation of the adhan was approved after municipal council members voted on an application submitted on January 24, 2012 by the President of the Stockholm Botkyrka Islamic Cultural Association, Ismail Okur.
The written decision delivered to Botkyrka Islamic Cultural Association President Okur by the police department indicated that adhan can be recited live from speakers at the Fittja Ulu Mosque on Fridays between the hours of 12:00 to 13:00 for 3 to 5 minutes.
Chief of Stockholm Police, Gunnar Edeland, also stated that the recitation of adhan from a minaret for Friday prayers posed no harm in regards to public order and traffic.
The recitation of adhan has been approved for the first time in Sweden.
Okur said that after technical shortcomings at the mosque were completed, a muezzin would recite the adhan for the first time Friday next week.
Construction on the Fittja Ulu Mosque began in 1998 and it opened for worship in 2007.
