According to the Associated Press, the president acknowledged in an interview with the Sueddeutsche Zeitung “sporadic contacts” between his government and the Taliban.
Under the Afghan constitution, all Afghans could take part in the elections, he said, adding: “The Taliban also should benefit from it.”
In response to a query about the Taliban leader contesting the polls, the president replied: “He can become a candidate for the presidency and give Afghans the opportunity to vote for or against him.”
