21 policemen killed in Afghanistan suicide attacks

At least 21 policemen were killed and 18 others, mostly civilians, were wounded in two separate suicide attacks Saturday in a crowded area of the northeast Afghan city of Kunduz and southern Kandahar city, provincial authorities said.

“We have 10 dead, including the counter terrorism police chief and head of traffic police and their bodyguards. Eighteen others are wounded, 13 civilians and five policemen,” Kunduz police spokesman Sayed Sarwar Hussani told AFP.

The toll was confirmed by provincial governor spokesman Enayatullah Khaleeq.

According to the head of the Kunduz health department, Saad Mukhtar, 19 people in total were wounded in the attack, which police officials said took place around 5:20 pm (12:50 GMT).

There was no claim of responsibility for the bombing, but such attacks have in the past been blamed on Taliban insurgents who are leading an 11-year insurgency against the US-backed government of President Hamid Karzai.

Earlier Saturday a suicide attack killed two civilians in the southeastern province of Ghazni.

On Friday, a suicide bomber in a car attacked a Nato convoy in Afghanistan’s strategic Kapisa province, killing at least five civilians and wounding 15 others, officials said.

Three Afghan brothers killed in US-led night raid

Three Afghan brothers have been killed in a night raid carried out by the US-led foreign troops in eastern Afghanistan, Press TV reports.

An Afghan governor confirmed the operation and said the three brothers had been in a taxi when foreign forces opened fire on them in Lugar Province late Saturday.

Afghan authorities have launched an investigation into the deadly incident.

Over the past few months, night raids by the US-led forces have resulted in civilian casualties in Afghanistan. The raids have increased tension between Washington and Kabul.

Afghans have expressed outrage at the attacks by holding demonstrations throughout the country.

Polish soldier killed in central Afghanistan

Taliban militants say they have killed a Polish soldier serving with the US-led NATO forces in a bomb attack carried out in central Afghanistan.

According to reports, the bomb explosion occurred in the war-torn country’s central province of Ghazni, killing the soldier who was on patrol in Shelgar area.

Two other Polish soldiers were reportedly wounded in the attack.

On January 23, Captain Krzysztof Wozniak, who was a member of Poland’s Elite Special Forces Unit (GROM), succumbed to his injuries hours after a gunman opened fire on a group of Polish soldiers on patrol in the same province.
