“Information provided through the portal will cover all aspects of Islamic,” Prime Minister’s Department Jamil Khir Baharom told a press conference.
“All issues related to the religion such as halal food and haj are on this portal,” he said.
The new portal, www.islamgrid.gov.my, was officially launched on Monday, December 5.
It is a project by the Malaysian Department of Islamic Development and Malaysian Administrative Modernization and Management Planning Unit.
Jamil said technology was a tool and an avenue for beneficial information. Yet, he added that some sources were used to spread of negative content.
Therefore, a new source offering truthful information about Islam was urged.
“We must prepare authentic and truthful content about Islam to balance the flood’ of outside information that could threaten the beliefs of Muslims,” he said.
After the event, Jamil said the issue of implementing hudud in a multi-racial culture should be resolved wisely.
Dubbed the “melting pot” of Asia for its potpourri of cultures, Malaysia has long been held up as a model of peaceful co-existence among its races and religions.
Muslim Malays form about 60 percent of Malaysia’s 26-million population, while Christians make up around 9.1 percent.
Buddhists constitute 19.2 percent, Hindu 6.3 while other traditional Chinese religions make up the rest of the population.
