The Taliban claim that they successfully targeted the aircraft on Friday in Gazra district of Herat province, the Afghan Islamic Press reported on Saturday.
However, ISAF dismissed the Taliban’s claim, saying the drone crashed due to a mechanical failure, but did not announce the exact location of the incident.
A recovery force was immediately sent to the site of the crash and swiftly retrieved the wreckage of the drone.
Taliban militants claim to have shot down several NATO and ISAF drone aircraft and helicopters in different parts of Afghanistan.
Hundreds of civilians have lost their lives in US-led airstrikes and ground operations in various parts of Afghanistan over the past few months, with Afghans becoming more and more outraged over the seemingly endless number of deadly assaults.
In addition, tens of thousands of Afghan civilians have lost their lives as a consequence of displacement, starvation, disease, exposure, lack of medical treatment, crime, and lawlessness resulting from the US-led war, which began in October 2001.
Afghan Interior Minister Zemarai Bashary said in a recent report that 2010 had been the deadliest year for civilians.
