As the US death toll in Afghanistan reaches 1,000, many analysts within US pose serious questions over the fate of a wrenching war that nine years on shows no sign of nearing an end.
The 1000th death of US soldiers was reported on Friday in southern Afghanistan where US-led forces are struggling to bring peace and stability and defeat Taliban in their stronghold.
Speaking to Press TV ahead of Memorial Day this weekend in US, Brent Budowsky a columnist with the Hills Newspaper has said that the US has not been effective in combating the Taliban and Afghan civilians are still continuing to pay the hefty price of war.
Asked whether the US administration has been effective in its stated goal to defeat the Taliban he said that he “would describe the situation today as a stalemate with no winners and no losers except for a lot of people who are dying from a war that nobody is winning.”
Budowsky believes that “clearly there have been too many civilian casualties and there is a need to for every one involved including the US and Taliban to stop killing civilians.”
He went on to say that “we can’t have a military policy, Obama is trying to buy time. What we need to do is to take advantage of the time, to negotiate to those who we can, and try to bring stability.”
